Thanks so much for all the responses to my questions! I really appreciate the insights. Here's yet another: (next week, actual posts, really.)
Every year, the Ad Council at FLUMC reads a book together. I've got some possibilities churning in my mind, but I'm interested in your suggestions. What book would you most want to read together with your church leadership and/or whole congregation?

The Bible?
:-)
unChristian
Put out by the Barna Group, it's the end result of a lot of research geared towards seeking how people (especially younger people) outside of Christianity see us as Christians. It's not a pretty picture. I'm halfway through it now and am attending a class where we're reading it at the Baptist Church in town.
It won't be pretty. But it will be insightful.

our church is doing the life journal....about 50 or so of us are doing it together....thats pretty cool to have the whole church reading the same parts of the bible at the same time.
I'm hearing good things about Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations by Bishop Schnase, as well as Everything Must Change by Brian McLaren. Haven't made my way through either of them yet, though.
Schnase's book is good.

The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan.
A fantastic book on the trials and tribulations, questions, spiritual phases, and learnings of the Christian walk and faith, in an allegorical story. Amazing that it was written by a lesser educated Bunyan while in prison for preaching the gospel outside of the Church of England. I love it. Plus, it is written in the same English as the King James Bible, so reading Bunyan's book gives me a much easier time reading my favorite version of the Bible.
I would love to have a group do Joseph Campbell's The Hero With A Thousand Faces ... although I honestly don't know if it would be right for most standard UMC groups. At least not any that I've been involved with (which may be yet another reason I'm currently churchless, huh?).
Simple Church by Thom Rainer & Eric Geiger
Tells how to cut through all the clutter that fill the calendars of many churches and focus on the process of making disicples.
