Question: Musicals

Each year at FLUMC for the past several years, a musical is used as a focal point for the season of Lent. Given our proximity to NYC, and the presence of several talented musicians in performers in our congregation, using a musical as a focal point has been a unique way of drawing folks in during Lent.

In the past, Wicked, music from The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Lion King have all been used as themes. This year, we're looking for a new musical. Currently, my music director and I have thought about Jekyll & Hyde or Jesus Christ Superstar. (OK, really, my music director has thought about Jekyll & Hyde, and I've thought about Superstar!) But I'm open to other ideas. What musical has the right kind of songs and themes to be adapted into a Lenten program?

Les Miserables? It's got social justice components to it. For a lighter version, Newsies does too.

I'll give you a dollar if you adapt "Avenue Q" to a church lenten theme. ;-)

I'll give you $10 if you can/do adapt Avenue Q OR Batboy: The Musical!

I'll up it to $50 if you do Spamalot.

Haha - helpful suggestions all ;) Actually, they did also do Les Mis before I got here - had to change some lyrics here and there though...

Love the idea! I am a fan of Godspell. The new revival of Guys and Dolls might have some possibilities.

You know ... Spamalot DOES have the Holy Grail as a big part of its plot ... I wouldn't count it out entirely ;)

I thing Godspell is an easy fit.

Mamma Mia or Rent have a couple of adaptable songs, but are harder fits.

Little Shop of Horrors

You have suffering, unexpected and unmerited gifts, dreams of somewhere better, salvation

Not sure any of the songs can be adapted, but that is my best thought.

"The Little Mermaid" - Part of your world has a longing story. Selling out to Ursula (Satan image) to accomplish your dreams. Father wants the very best for you. How we use / misuse our spirit gifts (talents), such as Ariel's voice. Just some quick thoughts. Good luck.
