This is the first year in a long, long time that I haven't done something to sort of "mark" the day. Most years, I throw in a cd of King's speeches after everyone else has gone to bed, or I pull out a copy of a King book and read a few pages, or I at the very least try to generate some conversation at work, with friends, something.
Somehow, this year, it was easier to "forget" about the day. Or not forget, exactly, but to get caught up in all the excitement about everything else that is going on. Maybe it's sort of a way of honoring King to say that my thoughts all day today have not been on King at all, but on tomorrow's inauguration.
And we had to work today anyway. But, you know, my executive director sent out a nice email to all staff saying, basically, "sorry you have to work, but really, isn't working all day to help people with disabilities become fully integrated and accepted into society a better way of honoring King's dream than sleeping in late and wasting the day in front of the television?" I have to agree with him.
