I just started reading Animal Liberation by Peter Singer. An interesting statistic (in the newest edition) in the preface: "Elections [in the US] are many times more costly [than in Europe] - the entire 2001 British general election cost less than Senator John Corzine spent to win a single New Jersey Senate seat in 2000."
